In 1942, an Aryan washerwoman arrives at Warsaw's ghetto. The Jewish wife she worked for before the war hires her to take her young daughter to the countryside until the war is over. Realizing she has the upper hand, the maid is rude and overbearing with her former employer. The desperate woman showers her with gifts and money and she agrees to take the child away. They leave by train, but after it's stopped, they are forced to proceed on foot. By this time, the innocent youngster has begun to charm her companion, so when they are stopped by a German patrol, the woman is prepared to risk her life for the child.
